NAFC Marine Centre

The NAFC Marine Centre is an industry-focused research and education centre located in Shetland. It provides training, marine science and quality services to support the nautical, fisheries, engineering, aquaculture and seafood industries.

The Centre is now part of the University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland’s newest university, and provides high quality accredited and bespoke training; research, development and knowledge exchange provision; and expert consultancy.

Shetland School of Nautical Studies, part of the NAFC Marine Centre, offers a wide variety of courses across a range of disciplines – afloat and ashore – to meet the needs of the Merchant Navy, engineering and fishing industries.

A highly qualified professional staff with significant experience is matched with state-of-the-art simulation equipment, engineering workshops and training vessels.  The School prides itself on its professionalism and ability to respond in a flexible and timely way to requests for training from individuals and employers.

The Merchant Navy cadet programme offers students the opportunity to undertake their training in Shetland as they work towards professional qualifications enabling them to serve as officers on merchant vessels.

Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering modules provide qualifications to fulfil necessary legal requirements in the workplace, such as the Merchant Navy and Fishing Vessel Professional Deck and Engineering Certificate of Competency courses, which underpin the Shetland pelagic and whitefish fleets, as well as Shetland Islands Council’s ferry service.

Other engineering training includes National Certificate and Modern Apprenticeship programmes, as well as a ‘Skills for Work’ skills course aimed at secondary school pupils who attend workshops at the Centre.  All of these provide a useful bridge between school and the world of work and further education.
